Want to clean your cast iron but don’t want to use soap?

There are many people that tell you not to use soap and water on cast iron.

That is a tale that is leftover from the days when soap was made out of lye and we know that lye will remove the seasoning from your cast iron because that is one of the processes we use in our restoration shop to remove the old seasoning.

Washing your cast iron with mild soap and water will not hurt your seasoning as long as you do not let it soak in soapy water. Just give it a good scrub and rinse with hot water. Then apply a coat of maintenance seasoning for the next time.
